Five Dumb Marketing Mistakes

Good marketing is hard work. There are so many
things you have to remember to get the results you want for the money you spend.
Unfortunately, it is easy to make mistakes. Here are some of the dumb things you
can do to make your marketing efforts fail.
1. You get lost in a crowd
One sure way of wasting your marketing money is to fail to stand out from
the crowd. Take mortgage lenders, for example. Every mortgage lenders offers
"the lowest rates", "the fastest approval process" and "the best service."
Nothing they do makes them appear better or worse) than any other lender.
The solution to this is to either create really memorable advertising (Ditech
Funding’s Pathetic Competitor spots) or to afford a perk, prize or process that
makes you different from all the rest.
2. Your focus lacks focus
Do you try to be everything to everyone, and market to a broad an audience?
This "we do it all" mentality is easily interpreted as "and none of it well."
Most successful businesses target a narrow, clearly defined market and provide
solutions for qualified prospects. Smart businesses get really good at doing one
or two things, and they sell to the customers who understand, need and want what
they do.
The idea of selling snow to Eskimos is a fable. Your marketing should focus on
those qualified prospects who meet the demographics for your product or service,
and you should ignore opportunities to take on work that doesn’t meet that
criteria.
3. You blow it all in one big roll
You are a risk-taker by nature, but putting all your money into a one shot
marketing effort (like an splashy TV spot or print ad) is a gamble that heavily
favors the house. Chances are, your ad will get lost in a crowd (see item 1
above) or not generate a return on investment that merits the expense. Instead,
use cost-effective guerilla tactics, such as viral marketing, classified ads,
sponsorships, networking, email, and postcards. Build a user-centric website and
use all your other marketing material to direct traffic to it. Although these
integrated marketing tactics may require more time and effort, they generally
generate a broader response with a greater ROI.
4. You try a little of this, a little of that
Although you should diversify your marketing tactics and not blow all your
money in one shot, you should be consistent in the image and offers that you
present to your prospects. Your company in general, and more specifically, you,
present an image to the public. This image and the perceptions it creates, is
know as your brand - the collection of feelings consumers have about the
products and services that you offer.
It is imperative, as a small businesses or service provider, that your marketing
consistently adheres to the standards of your brand, whether it be through use
of logos, colors, slogans or reputation.
5. You think once is enough
If you ever have uttered the phrase: "We tried that once and it didn’t
work," this one’s for you. Good marketing requires not only consistency in your
marketing message and integrity in your branding, it also requires repetition
over time. Lather, rinse., repeat does not get your hair any cleaner- it sells
more shampoo. Most marketing pundits say that it takes up to six contacts, or
exposures to your marketing message, before a prospect will consider placing an
order.
If you want to see positive results, attract more clients and earn more money,
you need to avoid these mistakes. Ask yourself "What am I doing wrong and what
can I do today to make it right?"
